Tooth Injury

13May08

If your tooth is broken, chipped or fractured in some way, try to see your dentist within an hour. If you get to a dentist within an hour, you have the best chance the tooth will be able to be put back successfully. Always CALL FIRST, if you reach the dentist practice and find it closed you will have lost valuable time.

A loose tooth after collision?

Do not touch the tooth or try to push it back, this could cause more damage. Go to the dentist immediately.

The tooth has been knocked out of the mouth?

Place the tooth back in the mouth to prevent the tooth drying out. The quicker this is done the better the chances of success:

Find the tooth

Pick it up touching only the crown (this is the part of the tooth usually seen sticking out of the gums). Never touch the root, as this will diminish chances the dentist being able to put it back successfully.

If the tooth is dirty rinse it in saliva. Never clean the tooth with water or detergent as this diminishes the chances of it being put back successfully and you might lose it. When the tooth is clean place it back in the mouth in its place. Never place back a 'baby' tooth, as this could cause damage to the grown-up tooth growing underneath. Keep the tooth with gauze or a paper napkin between the teeth. This is the best way to keep the tooth in its place. Go directly to the dentist. He or she will check the tooth and fix it back into place.

If you can't put the tooth back in its place:

Put the tooth in a glass of milk. If there is no milk keep it in your mouth, preferably in the area between the molars and the cheek. Make sure it does not dry out. If it is left out for more than half an hour there is little chance to put it back successfully. Never keep the tooth in a handkerchief or in a box while trying to reach the dentist.

Can I prevent dental damage?

Most of the time dental damage can be prevented by wearing a good mouthguard while practising sports, providing protection to your teeth and jaws. A mouthguard can not always prevent damage totally, but in most cases it can dramatically diminish the extent of the damage. Opposing what many people think, not all mouthguards are the same. The best protection is obtained with a custom made mouthguard as recommended by experts. Ready made and 'boil and bite' mouthguards are not made to your mouth, do not fit exactly and therefore provide less protection.
